Museum security guard Larry Daley discovers that the mysterious magical source that brings the museum's inhabitants to life is fading, and he must figure out how and why his friends exist before it's too late.

Larry Daley is a divorced father who can't seem to keep a job for more than a week. As a last resort, Larry applies for a job as a night shift security guard at the American Museum of Natural History. However, a seemingly easy job turns out to be an adventure when he finds that an ancient curse causes the "inhabitants" of the museum to come to life at night.

It follows the exploits of eleven-year-old Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life, a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him.
