A young porcupine grows up fast on the north rim of the Grand Canyon as she seeks shelter from plunging temperatures and fierce winds and protects herself from the many dangers of her wilderness habitat.

Norman, a porcupine whose best friend is a tree named Mildred, begins to feel jealous when another tree grows close to Mildred and acts out against the new tree.
