When budget cuts lead to the elimination of Delano Middle School's girl soccer team, Melina Stern and the other seventh and eighth graders are invited to try out for the high school varsity team--but the older players clearly do not want the middle schoolers around, and the girls are having trouble playing as a team.

Right after dance camp ends, Lily Richter's mother announces that the family is moving to a new town. Separated from her best friend, and enrolled in a larger unfamiliar middle school, Lily struggles to adjust, troubled by the feeling that her new dance team does not really want her.
